There are several causes for a hanging rescue mode console.

Here are some suggestions:

  1. Try typing "echo /*" and hit [Enter]?. If you receive a simple file listing, then you simply have a problem with your shell or terminal. Depending on the severity of the problem, you may need to rely on shell built-ins or a static rescue binary such as busybox.

  2. If you can still boot into a non-rescue mode, check that you have all the proper devices in /dev/.static. Some devices which are present on a normally functioning system running may not be present on a rescue-mode system which does not have udev or hotplug running.

If you have finished using the rescue mode or have locked up the terminal in some fashion, you may ForceShutdown.
